Desktop
The Desktop is a pivotal area of gameplay in Needy Streamer Overload, serving as the main base of operations in the game.
By default, when the player starts their game in a save file, it will start at the Night of Day 1. Immediately, Ame-chan will tell the player in JINE to log in to her "angelkawaii" account on Stream, with the password angelkawaii2
. Once that happens, multiple windows are opened, particularly Ame's webcam and the Task Manager.
Taskbar
From the start of the game, all of the features in the taskbar are accessible. This includes the "START" button Tweeter, JINE, and the Task Manager. The taskbar also shows the currently open windows in the middle. On the bottom right corner of the desktop screen, the current day, as well as the current period of said day (dusk, day, or night), would be displayed. The day button can also be used for accessing all recorded days in a data file.
If the player clicks on the "START" button, they will be introduced to multiple options in the game. Although it's not a pause menu, it has various options that a pause menu in other games would have, such as loading a new game, accessing settings, or exiting the game.
Option | Description |
---|---|
New Game | Used for loading a new game file on the current game file. It will clear all progress on the current save file and go back to Day 1. |
Load Game | Used for loading a saved game file. This button will lead to the same UI as the one found when clicking on the day button on the bottom right corner. |
My Pictures | Used for loading the folders containing many of Ame's pictures. |
Control Panel | Used for accessing the game's options. |
Restart | This option makes the player return to the booting screen and continue the game based on the current day that they are in the next time they play on the save file. There will be a prompt asking the player if they are sure if they want to do this. |
Shut Down | This option makes the player exit the game completely. There will be a prompt asking saying "Goodbye!", and if they click "OK", it will exit out of the game. |
Main activities
The main desktop activities are the various things the player can do to increase or decrease various stats.
Except for Stream, all of the main activity icons on the desktop are locked until Day 2. What is also common for all of the main activities, except for Stream, is that Ame-chan may gain new streaming ideas.
The activities below are listed based on the vertical order that they are listed in the Desktop.
Stream
Stream is a pivotal activity in the game. They are the main way to gain followers, although stress increases in almost every stream, and in many streams, mental darkness. In a couple of streams, affection decreases.
There are 12 types of streams:
- Chat & Chill
- Letsplay
- Nerd Talk
- Conspiracy Theories
- Netlore
- ASMR
- Sexy Stream
- Angel Explains
- KAngel Tries Stuff
- Breakdown Stream
- Sponsorships
- Internet Angel
Hang Out
Hang Out is a desktop application that involves ways where Ame-chan reduce her stress and increase her affection by interacting with P-chan in various ways. The three main actions include:
Sleep
Sleep is a desktop application that allows Ame-chan to sleep until a succeeding time period. Doing so will reduce stress and mental darkness. There are three options:
Depending on the time period Ame would sleep, the stress and mental darkness reductions would vary. Though generally, the longer the sleep period is, the more stress and mental darkness are reduced.
Medication
Medication is a desktop application that allows Ame-chan to consume drugs, mainly for the purpose of decreasing stress, but at the cost of her mental darkness.
In the Nintendo Switch version of the game, since this application involves substance usage, they are replaced with a more family-friendly version, called Magicals.
Internet
Internet is a desktop application that involves variably affecting Ame-chan's stats, including stress, affection, and mental darkness. The activities that can be done on the internet include:
Go Out
Go Out is a desktop application where Ame-chan can post on Social Media that she went out to a chosen location and take photos of the place she went to. Once she goes out, her affection increases and stress significantly decreases.
The following is a list of normal locations in Go Out (excluding special ones):
Trivia
Desktop
- A lot of the activities on the desktop, such as Sleep and Medication, would make no sense in a real-life desktop, because they involve Ame doing something outside of the desktop.
- The only ones that would make sense in a real life desktop are Stream and Internet. Parts of Hang Out could make sense on a real desktop too, particularly playing a game and some aspects of spending time with P-chan (such as chatting with P-chan, an option only available when Ame has less than 40 affection).
- The operating system for the desktop is Windose 20, where many GUI elements are based on a Windows NT operating system.
- The naming of such an operating system is a pun/portmanteau of "Windows" and "overdose".
- The "Angel Internet Yamero" logo that appears before the bootup of the game/operating system is a mock of the Energy Star logo.
- In the booting screen, it says that the copyright of the game is in 2020. This may be a reference to when the game started development.
- Part of the logo's name is used as the name of a standalone song called "Internet Yamero".
- Some elements of the design of the main menu is based on the login menu of Windows XP, such as the avatars, the welcome message, and even the bottom bar (without the list of endings of course).
- The aspect ratio of the desktop interface is 4:3, which is a common aspect ratio for other older computers that were released during the 1990s.
- The borders outside of the desktop are used as a form of pillarboxing to make up for the lack of width of the desktop interface. They are also used to indicate what time of the day it is to the player, and may change depending on what ending the player is in (such as Nerdy Girl Overload or Nymphomania).
- Even though
angelkawaii2
is the password suggested by Ame-chan, it is not the only password that works. Another password that works isangelikawaii2
, with an i added between "angel" and "kawaii". - It is possible for the player to drag the desktop icons and to place them elsewhere.
- However, when the player stops dragging the icon, the output of the desktop activity will be active. For example, if the player drags the Hang Out icon, its window will be displayed.
- An exception to this would be the Stream icon, if it is not during the night, where it is inactive.
- It is also possible to drag the icons of the options in Hang Out and Sleep.
- However, when the player stops dragging the icon, the output of the desktop activity will be active. For example, if the player drags the Hang Out icon, its window will be displayed.
Windows
- When the player tries to close or minimize Ame's webcam, it will open up immediately right after, and Ame will get briefly mad at the player. It is the only tab that has the option of closing and minimizing, but doing so will immediately reopen right after.
- Interestingly, depending on what window button the player has clicked on, there are slight differences:
- On the first click of either the close or minimize button (whether it's through minimizing by clicking the Webcam tab on the taskbar or the
-
button on the window), Ame briefly shows her idle expression, but quickly transitions to her slightly mad expression, before returning to whatever expression she previously had prior to the closure of the webcam. - If the player clicks the close button starting from the second time and moving forward, Ame will show the idle expression for around 3 seconds, before returning to the previous expression.
- If the player clicks the minimize button starting from the second time and moving forward, Ame will show the slightly mad expression for around 2 seconds, before returning to the previous expression.
- On the first click of either the close or minimize button (whether it's through minimizing by clicking the Webcam tab on the taskbar or the
- Interestingly, depending on what window button the player has clicked on, there are slight differences:
- If the player tries to click anywhere when the "Transformation" window is up it will immediately head to the Stream window (particularly, for streams with skippable intros). Similarly, when the "Travel" window is up, clicking anywhere will result in the Go Out action being done immediately.
- Interestingly, the "Travel" window used to be called the "Train" window. However, this was changed at one point.
- When the player tries to access secret.txt, Ame's webcam window will immediately move and try to block it (except in Comment te dire adieu). If the webcam was resized (whether it got bigger or smaller), it will restore onto its default size.
- When the player hovers their cursor on Ame's head, they can click to pat her and Ame will react positively. If this is not done by pressing Spend Time Together first, this would do nothing.
- The assets used for the transformation window have a resolution of 360x270 pixels, making them have a 4:3 aspect ratio. However, in the transformation window, those assets are upscaled and presented in a 720x480 resolution. In other words, those assets have their resolution doubled, have the top and bottom of these assets slightly cropped out, and are thus presented in a 3:2 aspect ratio.
- In the transformation window, there are 58 unique frames in the segment that features Ame, 111 unique frames in the segment that features KAngel (or Dark Angel in the
DARK ANGEL ending in particular), and 16 unique frames for the "On air" segment (though, for the "On air" segment in particular, there are different frames that are used, depending on the selected language.) This totals up to 185 frames used for the transformation window.
- The Dark Angel transformation simply re-uses the Ame and "On air" segments.
